A child living in Mount Sandel
Hi my name is Oola. I came to Ireland from Scotland on a dugout canoe, which was made out of animal skins held together by a thin wooden frame. Now I live in Mount Sandel , Co Derry which is surrounded by dense forest. This makes movement inland very difficult. Thats why we settled along the coast of the river Bann.
I am a hunter-gatherer. Hunter-gatherer means hunting animals and gathering berries and nuts. I usually gather the berries and hazel nuts with my mother. My father and brothers hunt birds and wild boar and also catch fish. When the animals are killed my father removes their skins while my mother and myself scrape the blood and fat from the skin with a stone scraper. Not a nice Job!!! Holes are then punched in the skin and we use animal bones to stitch pieces of skin together. That how we make our clothes. Our houses are circular huts. The frame of the hut is built from saplings. Saplings are young trees. Then the saplings are coverd in animal skins or rushes. We have a fire in the middle of our hut which is called the hearth. Small heaps of kitchen waste which is called middens are put just outside the hut.The only piece of evidence that exists of our huts today are the post holes. These were where the upright poles once stood.
We use tools to kill animals and skin them after. The tools are made from from small stones and pieces of flint known as microlits. Sharpe stones are set into pieces of wood to make axes, speares and arrows. Clothes are made from animal skins. Flat stones called scrapers are used to clean the skin.

What our houses look like.
You can also see our dugout canoes. Living beside the river was good as we could change camp regularly in search of new food supplies.
Tools we would have used
These are the flint heads of our arrows ,spears and axes.We used them to kill animals and catch fish. My brother is the best at using a spear to catch fish.
