A ROMAN SOLDIER
The Roman soldiers had two diffrent types of members legionaries and Auxilaries. Legionaries were only Roman citizens and Auxilaries were non - citizens. You had to be between 17-46 years of age to be a roman soldier.Soldiers usually served between 20-25 years.Cavalry soldiers were men on horse back. Soldiers kept fit by walking a 30 kilometres road march. The armour was a steel helmet, steel body armour, shoulder plates and groin protection. For weapons they had a dagger,a spear and a shield. They also carried a javelin that they threw. Sometimes some romans preformed mutiny (rebelling against centurion). If they were not sucessful they would be subject to decimato. This was when every 10th soldier was killed, even the ones who did not attempt it. They lived in quarters called barracks. When a soldier was finished serving they got a plot of land off the goverment. They carried their own food and water, enough to last 2 weeks. Meals consisted of beans , cheese, bread and gruel ( a type of soup made from barley). They drank cheap wine or water. They also wore hob nailed sandals.
